Transformers

The single most important decision in determining the quality of sound a tube amplifier can produce is the selection of transformers.

The quality of the transformer largely determines if your tube amp will meet expectations or be simply another tube amp with "glorious midrange, but rolled-off bass and attenuated high frequencies….” This applies to all transformers, your input, interstage, output, and power.

3 Dimension Audio uses Electraprint Transformers as our primary selection. Electraprint supplies output, interstage, and power transformers built to our own specifications. These transformers are only supplied to us and the specifications are proprietary which is one reason for why our amplifiers perform as well as they do.

Most companies use "off the shelf" transformers and, as a result, must design their amplifiers to conform to the specifications of the shelf transformers. It is pretty clear that building the transformers to specification is a more efficient design method than designing an amplifier to be optimized for the shelf bought transformers.

Other Transformers
We have used other transformers with excellent results. We will evaluate any transformers the customer wishes to determine if the selection will perform as expected. We have installed vintage Tango transformers for one customer with excellent results and also used Lundahl transformers in an amplifier for a client with excellent results.

We do not mark up transformers. Your cost will be our cost, with no additional markup. On occasion we have transformers for sale; please enquire if you would like to learn more.
